The Healthy Reefs for Healthy People Initiative(HRI) has launched the 2010 Report Card on Reef Health in a series of four high profile events in each of the MAR countries, along with over a dozen smaller launch events, stakeholder workshops, governmental presentations, scientific symposia, etc. The Belize Reef Summit and aerial art event gained international media attention for the plight of coral reefs and the Report Card results. HRI partnered with TNC, WWF and MAR Fund to organize a successful high-profile event in Cancun (Mexico) during the UN Climate Convention (COP-16), including a Report Card launch.HRI continues to follow up on several campaigns, including “Someday is Now” demanding the Belize Coastal Zone Plan, the “Scrap the Traps” campaign in Belize which has succeeded in convincing the Minister of Fisheries to ban this destructive fishing gear and the HRI role in the executive of the Coalition working to achieve a ban on offshore oil exploration in Belize.
