What We Do

Mesoamerican Reef Ecosystem

In order to better understand and assess reef ecosystem health we are developing a comprehensive “interpretation framework” that is grounded in the science of ecosystem structure and function, while incorporating human stressors and socio-economic concerns. In this early phase of the Initiative, we are working on the following:

A set of ecological and socio-economic indicators to provide a consistent evaluation and reporting of reef health and quality of life.

A set of corresponding yardstick values to measure ‘minimally acceptable’ and ‘optimally feasible’ levels of reef health for each indicator.

Identification of key information gaps and most urgent applied research needed to fine tune the healthy reef framework.

Practical tools for managers and decision-makers seeking to interpret and disseminate their monitoring data and make informed conservation decisions.

Creative, reliable and inspiring communications tools to galvanize public awareness and engage stakeholders in decision-making and into action.

A website that provides a platform to exchange information and ideas on the state of the Mesoamerican Reef and highlight efforts to understand and conserve it.

The Healthy Reefs for Healthy People Initiative builds on existing conservation and monitoring efforts to date in the region, including the MBRS Project’s Synoptic Monitoring Program. As such, the Initiative does not seek to create monitoring protocols per se. Rather, the Initiative will enhance those on-going efforts by providing new analytical tools to assist in data interpretation and practical applications. These tools will help practitioners decide when to take action because ecological conditions have fallen below an acceptable level, as well as indicate when management or conservation objectives are being fully achieved.
